I install that, and I'm able to drag stuff onto it. Midway through copying a 30 minute long folder of files, my cat steps on the place the magnetic power cord attaches to the computer. Hard shut down.I turn it back on and it recognizes the drive, but tells me that I am unable to modify it.I do some digging and find this: and i install macfuse and the NTFS to my mac.Now when I plug in the hard drive it won't even show up at all. What is happening?! Okay, first NTFS is not to be used with OS X so you should erase the disk and make it 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'Here's how to do this:1) Open 'Disk Utility'2) Select your external drive3) Navigate to the 'Erase' tab you should see this4) Under the drop down box that says 'Format' select 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' shown in the screenshot above. This is the format used by Mac's to be able to read/write harddrives most efficiently.5) Disk Utility will do the rest. Once the drive is re-formated it should mount successfully.Note: doing this will erase all data on the drive and you will need to backup your files again. It would be more helpful for me if I knew what the error was.
Besides, one of the first things to do with a malfunctioning external hard drive is to format it. You didn't answer my question: do you have any data on it that you need?
You said all you tried to do was copy a folder and it failed, so I'm assuming you don't. Select the hard drive, go to the 'Erase' tab, put in a new name, select HFS+Journaled as your format, and click 'Erase' in the bottom right.
This will format your drive specifically for your mac and your problems should be solved. NOTE: THIS WILL DESTROY ALL DATA ON THE DRIVE. Let me say that again, THIS WILL DESTROY ALL DATA ON THAT DRIVE. Therefore, if you have anything of value (which you haven't told me if you do or not), DON'T DO IT!This should fix your drive though, and you should be able to use it.
